3Com Corporation
EtherDisk Diskette for the EtherLink III LAN PC Card
Using the Configuration and Diagnostic Program
Overview
--------
The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic program makes
sure that the adapter is installed correctly and functioning properly in
your computer. The tests check the physical components, connectors,
and circuitry of the adapter and require only that the adapter be installed
in the computer. The network loop back test checks the adapter's ability
to transmit data on the network and requires that the adapter (coax only)
be connected to a loopback plug or to a network. The Echo test checks
the adapter's ability to correctly transmit and receive data over the
network and requires that the adapter be connected to a network on which
an echo server has been set up.
The configuration portion of the program allows you to change the
configuration parameters for the adapter.
Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic Program
-------------------------------------------------
The computer containing the adapter to be tested or configured must be
running DOS.
NOTE: If this computer is an operating server, notify all users of the
server to save their work and log out from the network. The
Configuration and Diagnostic program disrupts the normal operation
of servers and workstations, so work that is not saved may be lost.
There are two Configuration and Diagnostic programs:
1. A Graphical User Interface Version of the program can be started
from by inserting the EtherDisk into drive A (or B) and typing
a:\INSTALL
From the installation program select the <MAIN> button and then
select <TOOLS>.
2. A Commandline version of the configuration/diagnostics is also
available:
3C589CFG command keyword [parameter list]
3C589CFG represents the 3Com diagnostic program name. The brackets
indicate that the parameter list is optional.
The following commands can be used in the commandline program:
CONFIGURE - Configures an adapter either automatically or by using
a specified adapter configuration file.
ECHOSERVER - Enables a designated adapter to function within the
echo server.
HELP - Displays general or command-specific help information. To
get command-specific help,
enter: 3C589CFG HELP [command keyword]
LIST - Displays a list of installed adapters recognized by this
program and their assigned adapter numbers.
RUN - Executes the diagnostic tests, which can also be specified
from a file, on a selected adapter and writes the results
to the screen, a file, or a printer.
You can use the first two characters of a [command keyword] or a
[parameter identifier] as a shortcut.
For example, 3C589CFG HE RU means 3C589CFG HELP RUN.
Using the Configuration and Diagnostic Program
----------------------------------------------
The menus and dialog boxes that make up the Configuration and Diagnostic
program guide you through testing and configuring your adapter.
Context-sensitive help is always available by pressing the F1 key or
clicking on the <Help> button.
If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
in the \DIAG directory on this diskette for troubleshooting procedures.
Further Information
-------------------
For more information about the Configuration and Diagnostic program and how
to use it, refer to the appropriate user guide. The SUPPORT.TXT file in
the \INFO subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette provides information about
obtaining product support for the adapter.
The TROUBLE.TXT and SUPPORT.TXT files can be automatically displayed and
printed from the INSTALL.EXE program.
