  7.   Overview
  8.   --------

  10.   The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic program makes 
  11.   sure that the adapter is installed correctly and functioning properly in
  12.   your computer.  The tests check the physical components, connectors,
  13.   and circuitry of the adapter and require only that the adapter be installed
  14.   in the computer.  The network loop back test checks the adapter's ability 
  15.   to transmit data on the network and requires that the adapter (coax only) 
  16.   be connected to a loopback plug or to a network.  The Echo test checks 
  17.   the adapter's ability to correctly transmit and receive data over the 
  18.   network and requires that the adapter be connected to a network on which 
  19.   an echo server has been set up.

  21.   The configuration portion of the program allows you to change the
  22.   configuration parameters for the adapter.

  25.   Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic Program

  28.   The computer containing the adapter to be tested or configured must be
  29.   running DOS.
  30.  
  31.   NOTE:  If this computer is an operating server, notify all users of the
  32.      server to save their work and log out from the network.  The
  33.      Configuration and Diagnostic program disrupts the normal operation
  34.      of servers and workstations, so work that is not saved may be lost.

  36.   There are two Configuration and Diagnostic programs:
  37.  
  38.   1.  A Graphical User Interface Version of the program can be started
  39.       from by inserting the EtherDisk into drive A (or B) and typing
  40.          a:\INSTALL
  41.       From the installation program select the <MAIN> button and then
  42.       select <TOOLS>.

  44.   2.  A Commandline version of the configuration/diagnostics is also 
  45.       available:

  47.       3C589CFG command keyword [parameter list]
  48.  
  49.       3C589CFG represents the 3Com diagnostic program name.  The brackets
  50.       indicate that the parameter list is optional.

  52.       The following commands can be used in the commandline program:
  53.  
  54.       CONFIGURE - Configures an adapter either automatically or by using 
  55.                       a specified adapter configuration file.
  56.  
  57.       ECHOSERVER - Enables a designated adapter to function within the 
  58.                        echo server.
  59.  
  60.       HELP - Displays general or command-specific help information.  To 
  61.                  get command-specific help, 
  62.                          enter: 3C589CFG HELP  [command keyword]
  63.  
  64.       LIST - Displays a list of installed adapters recognized by this 
  65.                  program and their assigned adapter numbers.
  66.  
  67.       RUN - Executes the diagnostic tests, which can also be specified 
  68.                 from a file, on a selected adapter and writes the results 
  69.                 to the screen, a file, or a printer.

  71.       You can use the first two characters of a [command keyword] or a
  72.       [parameter identifier] as a shortcut.  
  73.           For example, 3C589CFG HE RU means 3C589CFG HELP RUN.

  76.   Using the Configuration and Diagnostic Program

  79.   The menus and dialog boxes that make up the Configuration and Diagnostic
  80.   program guide you through testing and configuring your adapter.
  81.   Context-sensitive help is always available by pressing the F1 key or 
  82.   clicking on the <Help> button.

  85.   If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
  86.   in the \DIAG directory on this diskette for troubleshooting procedures.

  94.   the \INFO subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette provides information about

  98.   printed from the INSTALL.EXE program.
